Hire car drop 2 nights Medieval old town Cheap beer Drive from Munich
Early Start

We drive from Munich to Prague on 23 Sep, departing around 5am. The drive is about 4.5 hours on the autobahn direct. Arrive mid-morning, drop the hire car, and you've got the rest of the day. Early night on 24 Sep — flight to London departs 07:00.

Prague is one of Europe's most beautiful cities — a medieval old town virtually untouched by WW2, a UNESCO-listed centre, a stunning castle on the hill, and some of the cheapest beer on the continent. Two nights doesn't do it full justice but you'll get the highlights.

The Czech koruna (CZK) is the currency — not Euro. Most tourist places accept Euro but at a bad exchange rate. Use CZK or pay by card. ATMs are plentiful.

  • Currency: Czech Koruna (CZK). ~27 CZK = 1 EUR (verify current rate).
  • Beer is typically 50–70 CZK (~€2) per 0.5L. Yes, really.
  • The historic centre is very walkable — Old Town, Charles Bridge, and the Castle are all close.
  • Weather in September: 15–20°C. Comfortable for walking.
  • Hire car note: confirm AT/CZ cross-border permission before departure. Drop location TBC in Prague.
OT
Old Town Square (Staročměstské náměstí)
The heart of Prague. Surrounded by Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance architecture. Home to the famous Astronomical Clock (Orloj) — catch the hourly mechanical show. Busy with tourists but genuinely stunning, especially in the early morning.
PC
Prague Castle (Pražský hrad)
The largest ancient castle complex in the world. Perched on a hill above the city with great views. Inside: St. Vitus Cathedral, Old Royal Palace, St. George's Basilica. You can walk the castle grounds for free; interior buildings have entry fees. Allow 2–3 hours.
JQ
Josefov (Jewish Quarter)
One of the best-preserved Jewish quarters in Europe. Six synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery (one of the oldest in the world). Powerful history — entry to the Jewish Museum complex is about 500 CZK.
WS
Wenceslas Square (Václavské náměstí)
More of a long boulevard than a square — the commercial heart of the New Town. The scene of major historical events including the 1968 Prague Spring and 1989 Velvet Revolution. Good for wandering, eating, and getting a feel for modern Prague.
PB
Prague Pub Crawl
Prague's pub crawl scene is legendary — multiple operators run nightly tours through 4–5 bars with free shots and discounted drinks. A fun way to meet people and see some of the city's nightlife. Meets at Old Town Square most evenings. ~500–600 CZK.
RC
Vltava River Cruise
Short 1-hour boat trips along the Vltava river offering a different perspective on the city, Charles Bridge, and the castle. Cheap, relaxing, and great for photos. Depart from near Čechův most (Čech Bridge) or near the National Theatre.
FT
Free Walking Tour
Tip-based walking tours depart from the Astronomical Clock and cover the Old Town, Jewish Quarter, Charles Bridge, and the castle. Great orientation for a first day. Several operators — look for groups assembled near the clock.
CB
Charles Bridge (Karlův most)
Prague's most iconic landmark — a stunning medieval stone bridge lined with 30 Baroque statues crossing the Vltava. Crowded during the day; magical at dawn or dusk. Cross it at least once each way. Look for the saint statues — touching one is said to bring luck.
AO
Astronomical Clock (Orloj)
Medieval astronomical clock on the Old Town Hall, installed in 1410. One of the oldest working astronomical clocks in the world. Every hour (9am–9pm) the skeleton rings a bell, windows open and the 12 apostles parade past. Worth watching at least once.
DH
Dancing House (Tancující dům)
Iconic 1990s building designed by Frank Gehry and Vlado Milunić — looks like a couple dancing (nicknamed "Fred and Ginger"). On the banks of the Vltava. There's a rooftop restaurant and bar with good views. Worth seeing even just from the outside.
MT
Metro & Trams
Prague has a clean, efficient metro (3 lines: A, B, C) and an excellent 24/7 tram network. Single tickets: 30 CZK (30 min), 40 CZK (90 min). 24h pass: 120 CZK. Validate tickets before boarding. Tram 22 is a favourite tourist route — passes Prague Castle.
HR
Hire Car Drop
The hire car gets dropped in Prague on 23 Sep. Confirm the drop location with the rental company (Sixt/Hertz/Europcar) — typically there are drop points near the city centre or at specific depot addresses. Also confirm the AT/CZ cross-border permission before leaving Munich.
RD
Getting to the Airport
Václav Havel Airport (PRG) is about 17km west of the city. Best options: Uber (~300–400 CZK), taxi (~500 CZK — agree price before), or bus (119 from Nádraží Veleslavín metro then metro to city — cheap but takes ~45 min). For a 07:00 flight, budget 4:30am taxi or Uber.
