The Drive

Munich to Salzburg is one of the most scenic drives in Europe. Take the A8 autobahn south-east toward Salzburg. As you approach, the Alps start to appear. The Austrian border is seamless (Schengen zone — no passport check). Park near the Altstadt — there are multi-storey car parks on the edge of the old town.

Austrian vignette: Austria requires a motorway toll sticker (Vignette) for driving on motorways. The hire car should have one, but verify with the rental company.

What to Do

HF
Hohensalzburg Fortress (Festung Hohensalzburg)
One of the largest and best-preserved medieval castles in Europe, perched on the Festungsberg hill above the city. Stunning views of Salzburg and the Alps from the ramparts. Take the funicular (Festungsbahn) up from the old town — included in the entry ticket (~€15). Allow 2 hours.
MG
Mirabell Palace & Gardens
The Baroque palace commissioned by the Archbishop of Salzburg. The formal gardens are beautiful and free — also a Sound of Music filming location. The Great Hall inside is sometimes used for concerts. Gardens are open all day; the palace itself has restricted access.
GM
Getreidegasse & Old Town (Altstadt)
Salzburg's famous pedestrian shopping street, lined with guild signs. Mozart's birthplace (Mozarts Geburtshaus) is at No. 9 — now a museum (~€12). The Altstadt as a whole is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Great for wandering, eating, and souvenir shopping.
KA
Kapuzinerberg Hill
A forested hill on the east bank of the Salzach river with a network of hiking paths and great views back across the city. A short steep climb rewards you with an uncrowded panorama. Free and takes about 30 minutes up and back.
SC
Schnitzel & Austrian Food
Salzburg has excellent traditional Austrian food. Wiener Schnitzel (veal or pork, thin, breadcrumbed, fried) with Preiselbeeren (cranberry sauce) and potato salad is the classic order. Also try Kasnocken (cheese spaetzle), Tafelspitz (boiled beef), and Salzburger Nockerl (a fluffy soufflé dessert for two). Restaurants in the Altstadt are tourist-priced; slightly better value just off the main streets.

Austrian Vignette

Austrian motorways require a toll sticker (Vignette). If the hire car doesn't have one, you need to buy it at a service station near the border. A 10-day vignette is ~€9.90 and available at petrol stations. Driving without one risks a fine. Verify with the hire car company before departure.
